Serving Exceptionally and Celebrating Exceptionalities (Year 6)

Written by Iris Gail Ducat

The UB School of Natural Sciences (SNS) continued its commitment to serve for the 6th consecutive year as it conducted its annual medical mission and gift-giving activity among families & patients of the La Trinidad Therapy Center for Children with  Disabilities. The activity was conducted last November 30, 2024, at the Tourism Building in the Municipality of La Trinidad, Benguet.

This initiative aimed to provide essential medical and laboratory services to families in the La Trinidad community, ensuring that children with disabilities could receive the care they need. A total of 50 patients participated, benefiting from basic health & medical assessments through routine laboratory tests that align with the university’s commitment to social responsibility and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly  SDG #3: Good Health and Well-being.

The beneficiaries had their vital sign checks, height and weight measurements taken,  and consultations were also made with one of the school’s medical doctors. A BMLS  alumnus who is a post-graduate intern also helped with the consultation. Free laboratory tests that included random blood sugar determination, complete blood count, and urinalysis were conducted. Additionally, each family received gift packs, bringing joy and support during the holiday season. The positive response from the beneficiaries showed their deep appreciation and the importance of such outreach initiatives in addressing health disparities and fostering a culture of social responsibility among alumni, faculty members, and staff from the UB SNS.

This successful medical mission exemplifies the university’s dedication to holistic education by integrating academic excellence with a commitment to community service.  The SNS looks forward to continuing its efforts in promoting health and well-being in the community while empowering future healthcare professionals through hands-on experience.
